DO NOT STOP MEETING TOGETHER

In Hebrews 10:23-25, the author says, "Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching."

We are living at a time when the Gospel is ridiculed, and the name of Christ is defamed, in some parts of the world like, in the west, churches are closing almost every other week. While in other parts like Africa, there is a new church almost every other week, but these churches are being run like a business with their pastors preaching twisted, corrupt, and new forms of the gospel, (not that there is another gospel apart from the one handed to us from Christ through the Holy Apostles) for their own selfish gain. The influence of the world on the Church is becoming more and more visible by the day and it is a call to the body of Christ to wake up.

The verses above bring home so many strong points that we need to adhere to:

(1). LET US HOLD TO THE HOPE WE PROFESS.

While everyone else in the world thinks Christianity a joke, we who have tasted the goodness of the LORD (1 Peter 2:3) ought to boldly proclaim Him. We are commanded to hold on to hope without wavering because there are times when things do not and will not make sense. There are times when quitting will seem the easier choice, but we are told to hold on to hope. Our motivation should be pleasing our LORD and Savior Jesus Christ who is the source of our encouragement, "for he who promised is faithful." When all seems not to make sense, trust in the one who promised, for He is faithful.

(2). SPUR ONE ANOTHER TO LOVE AND GOOD DEEDS.

We are here called to intentionally urge one another into positive action. The Greek word has an idea of dashing or plunging (rush or run), and the author of Hebrews uses it to direct the believer's action. While the world rushes to fight, retaliation, chaos, hatred, and the like, Christians are called to intentionally rush and push one another to love and to do good things, things that glorify God. The only action believers should be quick to jump into is the act of love.

(3). DO NOT GIVE UP MEETING TOGETHER Here is the third command, let us not give up meeting together. It appears from the tone of the letter that some Christians had stopped being part of the corporate worship and needed to be reminded. Some of you have developed a bad habit of not wanting to show up for fellowship the author says. One huge negative impact of Covid-19 on the Church is that it created, encouraged, and built laziness in the hearts of many Christians. There are those who have falsely come to believe that they are okay by themselves.

That mindset is one of the most grossing inventions of Satan in the twenty-first century because he knows that if he can keep you away from the fellowship of like-minded believers, he can manipulate you into doing his bidding. Like Casting Crowns sang in "Waiting on the night to fall," the devil knows he can't have your soul but he will gladly rob you blind. Let us encourage one another and continue to meet together as a community of believers.

(4). DO NOT FORGET THE DAY IS APPROACHING

The lyrics to the song "Waiting on the night to fall" continues that the devil "knows you have the answers, but the truth lies dusty on yourself. And the sword that you could slay him with has become an ornament and nothing else. You could put him back down in his hole in the ground, but he knows you never will. He's been around so long, you got used to the smell." The author of Hebrews tells us that the confidence we have in the hope we profess, the commitment to love and action, and our devotion to corporate worship and fellowship should only be increasing, not decreasing because the day of the LORD is drawing near. Let us not lose sight of that... Jesus is coming back soon and it could be today. Even so, Come LORD Jesus (Revelation 22:20).

I pray and hope that these verses encourage you to stay strong and committed to the Lord. Remember, God is always with you, giving you strength, the grace, and courage you need for the work He has called you to do. Trust in Him and never give up on your faith. Do not give up on God because He will never give up on you.

Blessings!
